EXPERIENCE UNSPOILED WILDERNESS withFOREST SAFARISA Tangletours Safari is an outing in a comfortable, air conditioned, safe, informally small though fully accredited 4WD tour vehicle. But that is just the beginning. Your guide 'Tangles' is a local identity who can relate true reminiscences dating back around 50 years, to a childhood when Batemans Bay was still a sleepy fishing and timber village. His varied career has included truck driving, commercial fishing and timber cutting, until just for a change he switched to photography and journalism as editor of a local paper. Tangles' introduction to tourism was as skipper of a Clyde River cruise ferry. His continuously expanding local knowledge will ensure that your day of forest fun will be educative and informative to a degree which will make it the experience of a lifetime. Each tour package is informal and flexible, varying according to the season of the year and to the desires of your party. The range includes:- FULL DAY FOUR WHEEL DRIVE - Tangles will attempt to cram as much varied flora and topography as possible into your day. Definitely included will be Rain Forest, Old Growth Hardwood Forest and wildflower laden Scrub Woodland, with four wheel drive fire trails and a few creek crossings for good measure as you seek out the fabulous wilderness pockets which are Tangles' favourites. Lunch will be sausages, onions and steaks barbecued over a camp fire in true Aussie bushman style. If you have energy to burn off, you can include a walk or even an incredible swim up a creek into rainforest, or walk to an old gold mine. But no walking is necessary unless desired by your party. HISTORIC GOLD TOWNS - Tangles designed this tour for those who feel that rough four wheel drive trails may not be their cup of tea. Little known forest roads are used to feature Wandera Mountain Look Out, Araluen, Majors Creek and Monga. Fertile soils, where the Araluen Valley nestles among the surrounding ranges, support prime peach orchards. Lunch at the Elrington Hotel is a special treat. This hotel takes its name from Major Elrington, who was a first settler in the Majors Creek district. Pristine rain forest and regenerated Brown Barrel forest are visited near Monga, a saw milling ghost town. Abandoned vehicles and collapsing buildings are a nostalgic reminder of a once properous past, where timber milling commenced two years before Bourke and Wills set out on their ill fated expedition. CRUISE COMBINATION - This tour adds the Clyde Princess cruise from Batemans bay upstream along the Clyde River to Nelligen, to a Tangletours Safari. Lunch, at the relics of a gold fossickers' settlement includes generous quantities of leg ham, tomatoes and onion, with freshly sliced, crisp, crusty hot bake bread and billy tea. The 360 degree panorama from 'Big Bit' forest fire look out is the next feature, followed by inspection of the vast resource of Spotted Gum in Benandarah State Forest. The tour pauses beside a giant ancient gum tree estimated to be well in excess of 500 years old. A full complement of passengers is necessary to link hands around the massive buttresses of this forest veteran. WILDERNESS ADVENTURE -This tour is for the adventurous and energetic, featuring a severe grade bush walk into an otherwise inaccessible rain forest gorge, where there are no constructed trails or board walks. There are many native orchids, giant softwood trees, ferns, vines and waterfalls. This hike is an achievement and experience which your group will treasure for the rest of their lives. After the climb, there is a short drive to another creek, for a mid afternoon barbecue. It is a secret to many, that the river Clyde, draining into the waters of Batemans Bay, remains one of the few Australian rivers still classified as 'Truly Wild'. Only five per cent of her catchment area is privately owned and much is inaccessible, locked away as wilderness in the Morton and Budawang National Parks. But we are indeed fortunate that during the heritage years of our timber cutting past, a vast network of roads and trails was developed through managed State Forests, creating 'jumping off points' for appreciation of all this wilderness. Tangletours, with the vast local knowledge of Tangles, offers the quickest, easiest and best way to cram as much wilderness as possible, into one informative and fun filled day. Bookings and pick up arrangements may be made through Eurobodalla Coast Visitors Information Centres and selected accommodation.
